In cooperation with the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Application Oriented Coating Development at TU Wien (http://hardcoatings.tuwien.ac.at/) and Project Noreia (http://www.project-noreia.at/), the Space Team has coated a prototype of the second stage fincan of The Hound. With the only 5µm thick titanium nitrid based coating, the laser sintered aluminum fincan does not only look fancy, but also has the advantage of reduced heat input. This is important because with a top speed of more than Mach 3, a significant heating of the fincan due to air friction is expected. The prototype can now be used to evaluate how well the coating bondes with the base material and what surface quality can be achieved.
